Answer the following questions in no less than 300 words but no greater than 1000 words put together...
Character's background (their past and present): Jim @ Terra Nova Wikia
Character's personality: Jim Shannon is an incredibly passionate man, and one of good morals and direction.

Incredibly protective over his family, Jim is a loyal and loving father and husband to his wife, Elisabeth, and their three kids, Josh, Maddie and Zoe. There is nothing Jim values more than his family, shown when he risks everything protecting them at the beginning of the series. He punches an officer in the face after he distresses two-year-old Zoe during a population "check". And the reason for the check is why Jim's love for his family is often a bad thing.

It's 2149, the Earth is over-populated and dying of pollution, and the United States has issued a law known as "A Family is Four." That's a husband, wife and two kids. No more. The Shannons decided to have a third child, therefore breaking the law. The reasoning was "it just seemed like a good idea at the time." Jim's protectiveness of his family leads him to bending, and breaking, laws and rules sometimes, but is, generally, law-abiding and obedient.

An ex-narcotics detective, Jim is cautious, whilst still having the nerve to go with his gut instinct. He's an excellent investigator, able to follow up on leads and come to conclusions pretty quickly.

Jim has a quick temper, but this is usually reserved for when he thinks his family or close friends are in danger. He can be brash, quick to act, often with catastrophic circumstances, such as when he laid out a police officer who was scaring Zoe. It was said that if he hadn't done that, all he would have gotten was a fine, instead of 6 years in Golad prison.

He often takes things into his own hands; such as when disobeying orders several times, and leaving the colony, even going so far as to slightly manipulating people into following along with his ideas. Granted, this was the right thing to do, and Jim's initiative ends up saving more lives than if he hadn't acted on it.

Brave, but incredibly reckless, it's hinted that Jim bulls his way into situations far too often. His wife remarks if I had a Terra for every time I put you back together... indicating that Jim often is prone to getting himself hurt in the line of duty. He brushes it off, however. Despite this, it was his headstrong nature that landed him a place on Terra Nova's security force as the colony's first cop and de facto Sheriff of Terra Nova.

Despite this, his recklessness is always to protect. Whether it be his family or Terra Nova, Jim is never seen to be acting selfishly in his intentions. This is shown when he saves Commander Taylor from a Sixer aiming to shoot him in the head, or his son from Acceraptors. He even went above and beyond to save the brother of a young girl from the Sixers camp.

All in all, Jim is excellent with kids, a loyal family man, fiercely protective over what's his, with a temper to help things along. He's an excellent cop, with a keen investigative eye and a strong dedication to duty. Despite being reckless and headstrong, he's someone you can trust, granted you're on his good side.
Character's skills/abilities/powers: Jim is a regular human with no extra-ordinary skills or abilities. He's a good hand-to-hand fighter, but seems to lack formal training. He's good with firearms, able to adapt from handguns to rifles, and a pretty decent driver. Jim has excellent deductive and investigative prowess due to being a Chicago PD narcotics officer.

Why do you want to play this character in Ten Forward, and what do you plan to do with them? Taking Jim from this canon point presents so many oppertunities for CR, and the oppertunity to canon update him with memories, taking him from various points during his stay in Terra Nova only improves that.

Writing Sample #1: Jim @ Latest TDM
Writing Sample #2 (optional): Jim stops in his tracks, confused…

He waits there for a long moment, listening, frowning under the black fabric cover over his head. His wrists were still bound with cable ties, and his ribs hurt like hell… A couple were fractured, definitely. He could feel one pressing against his lung as he breathes in, wincing slightly with each breath. An automatic reaction. Normally he wouldn’t like to show any weakness in front of Mira and her Sixers, but… this he can’t help.

…Speaking of Sixers, he’s been stopped for a while. If he wasn’t going the pace his Sixer escorts liked, he’d get jabbed in the shoulder with a sonic rifle… At least, that was how it was when they found him. Maybe they were where they wanted him to be?

It didn’t explain the strange noises he was hearing…

Shifting, wincing again, Jim raises his arms, hesitantly. When there was no immediate backlash, he hooks his thumbs under the lip of the fabric bag covering his head and moves to remove it.

To the occupants of Ten Forward, seeing a man remove a sack from his head whilst his hands are tied may be slightly amusing. The rumble of light chatter in the lounge has died down as more people notice the scruffy, dishevelled man, who looks like he’s just been released from prison.

A young Tellarite ensign stands, walking over to Jim, frowning slightly. “Excuse me, sir… Do you need assistance?”

At the words, Jim freezes. He’s not alone, obviously, but that wasn’t something a Sixer would ask. Was he back at Terra Nova? Probably not. He would have had the bag removed and ushered straight to Taylor for a scolding once they noticed it was him. Shifting a bit, he shrugs slightly.

“No, no… It’s fine. I got it.” And he does. He manages to shove off the sack, it falling to the floor behind him… And then he double-takes, stepping back, as he sees the Tellarite standing in front of him.

“Woah-!” A pause, there, as he considers who, or what, is standing there. “S-Sorry.” He manages to blurt out, as the Ensign inclines his head.

“Don’t worry, sir, I’ve had worse reactions from humans. Do you need any more assistance?” He sounds concerned about Jim’s well-being, at the very least… his mental health at worst… At least, that was the impression Jim got.

“No… I’m… I’m fine. Just a bit disorientated. Thank you.” The Tellarite nods and moves on, back to his table, as Jim looks around the lounge, frowning.

“Now… where the hell am I this time?” He mumbles to himself, working to strip his hands of his zipties. Once free, a hand instantly goes to his ribs, tenderly patting at them, wincing. "Definitely broken."
